The Grand Roissy Tourist Office's promotional team visited the ARCHÉA museum in Louvres to discover "Red! Archaeology of a Color." The verdict: a captivating and immersive exhibition, not to be missed before November 15, 2026.

One color, millennia of history

Dyes

From the moment you enter, the scenography immerses you in a world of shades of red, from deep crimson to warm ochre, including bright pink. The ARCHÉA intercommunal museum designed an ambitious exhibition around the color red and its uses throughout the ages, from the early prehistoric traces up to the Middle AgesWe learn that red is one of the very first colors that humans produced, more than 40,000 years ago, in what is now France.

The journey begins with a surprising etymological and linguistic exploration. Did you know that the word "red" comes from Latin? rubeus, itself derived from Sanskrit RudhiraMeaning "blood red"? And that in Russian, "red" and "beautiful" share the same root? The exhibition makes you want to see the world differently.

Objects that tell the whole story

Antique vases

The first part reveals the raw materials atorigin of red Ochre, hematite, red jasper, ferruginous sandstone… We discover how our prehistoric ancestors ground, heated and transformed these rocks to extract pigments. Jasper tools over 100,000 years old, figurine plaques from the late Bronze Age, Mousterian engraved plaques… each object is a marvel.

Armorial Weather Vane

The second part, devoted to art, fashion, and symbolism from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, is a real highlight. It features Merovingian fibulae set with garnets from India and Sri Lanka, discovered in the Saint-Rieul necropolis, just a stone's throw from the museum! There are also bright red Gallo-Roman ceramics and a superb evocation of the color red in medieval heraldry.

A scenography designed for everyone

What particularly appealed to us? The exhibition is designed for all audiences, from the youngest to the most curious. A children's journey allows families to go to the Merovingian jewelry hunt to be placed on a character, while interactive videos answer the big questions: how does our eye perceive colors? Why is Gallo-Roman sigillata so red and so bright? Workshops and a photo booth to leave decked out in red completes a decidedly colourful visit.

A photo booth is available for your use.

The third and final part explores the natural and artificial transformations of red: oxidation, firing, patinas… You will never look at a rusty coin the same way again.

A catalogue that extends the experience

The exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful book of 144 pages published by Éditions Faton, bringing together 33 texts signed by 37 specialists: archaeologists, art historians, researchers. Available at the museum shop for €15, it makes a lovely souvenir to take home.

Our opinion: an unmissable outing in Île-de-France

Accessible, scientific and visually spectacular, "Red!" is one of those rare exhibitions that truly appeals to everyone. Less than 30 minutes from Paris by RER DThe ARCHÉA museum is well worth a visit, and this exhibition in particular is worth a return trip. We're already leaving with the desire to see the European Night of Museums on May 23rd!
