The cathedral basilica of Saint-Denis is the first monumental masterpiece that founded Gothic art in the XNUMXth century.
Built on the tomb of Saint Denis, martyred by the Romans in the XNUMXrd century, the basilica of Saint-Denis is the first monumental testimony of Gothic art. Then royal abbey it illuminated the artistic, political and spiritual history of the Middle Ages. Become one of the main necropolises of the Merovingian aristocrats and Carolingian rulers, it definitively links its destiny to that of royalty under the Capetians by becoming the burial place of the kings of France.
It shelters more than 70 richly sculpted tombs including those of Clovis, Dagobert, Bertrand du Guesclin, François Ier, Catherine de Médicis, Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette ...
