Luzarches circuit - Royaumont Abbey

A most interesting circuit through the diversity of the sites, the richness of the flora and fauna, and the discovery of the Cistercian abbey of Saint Louis.

Porte Saint-Come
Old city gate that gave access to the castle from above. It dates for its lower part from the beginning of the XNUMXth century. You can see a stunner and the sunken path where the portcullis used to slide. It was enhanced in the XNUMXth century in “troubadour” style.

The mill of Giez, located on the course of the Ysieux, was an ordinary mill, that is to say that the inhabitants of the surroundings had to go and grind their wheat at this mill and pay a tax to the monks of Royaumont. It was bought in full in July 1259 from Count Thibault de Beaumont for 500 Parisian pounds, which represented a very large sum.

Royaumont
Built in 1228 by King Saint Louis, it now belongs to the Royaumont Foundation. From the park with tree-lined paths, one immediately notices a curious building divided in two by a canal, the latrines. Then, through the passage-parlor, you enter the superb Gothic cloister which opens onto the monks' refectory and the kitchens to the south, and the sacristy to the east, adjoining the church of which spectacular ruins remain.
The park, traversed by canals, testifies to the mastery of the Cistercians in terms of hydraulics, but also to the installation of a cotton mill within the walls of the abbey in the XNUMXth century.

Bertinval Watermill
Mentioned as early as 1238, at the very beginning of the 1870th century it was associated with a seigniorial hotel. This manor, still legible on the plans of the end of the XNUMXth century, no longer exists today and the whole of the mill was largely rebuilt during the XNUMXth century. The mill ceased its activity in XNUMX.
