Located in Villers-Cotterêts, 50 km from Roissy, President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the International City of the French Language at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts, the Monday October 30 2023.

A historic renovation project

On October 30, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, inaugurated the first international city of the French language at the Château de Villers-Cotterêts. This international City is the result of an ambitious project aimed at giving new life to this Renaissance jewel, located in the heart of Aisne, which was once the residence of François I.

The Château de Villers-Cotterêts, after years of abandonment, was restored through a colossal construction site, involving 600 workers from 220 companies and the renovation of 3 m600 of roof, among others. After three years of hard work, the castle is now classified as a national domain and has become the International City of the French Language.

The French language in the spotlight

The Cité internationale de la langue française is the first cultural place entirely dedicated to the French language. It offers a permanent visit route allowing you to discover the history, evolution and richness of the French language. It also offers temporary exhibitions, shows, concerts, debates, training sessions, workshops and more.

This project attracted many guests, including government figures, international delegations and intellectuals. Emmanuel Macron welcomed this achievement by emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting the French language.

The International City of the French Language continues to develop, with future construction projects including a hotel, restaurant and leisure activities. This unique place opens its doors to allow everyone to discover the French language in a different and fun way.
